2016 Hudson Year Review

2016 has been quite a rollercoaster. It started with us anxiously awaiting the arrival of a new bundle of joy but then only a couple of months later was the early and scary arrival of our sweet sweet boy.

Hudson's First Christmas!

Hudson's 1st Christmas was SO much fun! All he wanted to do was eat the boxes and play with the paper, of course. We are so thankful this Christmas to be home and healthy. Thank you all for the many and continued prayers.

Mid-December Renal Appointment

Whew, what a day! We left our house at 8:30am, dropped the girls off at a friend's house, and headed off to Riley Hospital for a couple of appointments today. We just got back home around 3:00pm and boy are we tired.

Nuerologist Amazed!!!

Neuro appointment today! I think this is our first visit ever at Riley Hospital that we have an appointment with NO blood draws at all today. It feels pretty good. Happy Friday!

Putting Up Christmas Tree

As we put up our Christmas tree this past weekend I came across this ornament Bryan had gotten me for Christmas last year. How fitting to see it hanging on our tree this year with our little miracle home with us!

6 Month Neurologist Appointment

Hudson had a big appointment this morning with his neurologist. He is 6 months old but 5 months adjusted. There have been a few concerns as of late and the neurologist agreed it's best to get that occupational and physical therapy started ASAP.

6 Months Old Today!

6 months?!? Our little Huddy Buddy is 6 months old TODAY. I just can't believe it. In the last 6 months time has stood still and yet has gone so fast at the same time. Hudson has endured far greater trials that we never thought would be something our family would go through. From lack of oxygen at birth, to the unknown neurological damage he might have, to his kidneys not working, and enduring 6 surgeries by 6 months....our sweet sweet Hudson has stayed so strong and still manages to give you a smile.

G-Tube Surgery (Facebook Posts)

Hudson was scheduled for G-Tube surgery on Monday, August 22nd. Jess and I decided to go with the G-Tube after spending 2 1/2 months using the NG-Tube. Hudson was only supposed to be in the hospital for 3-4 days but ended up being there for 6 days. The major issue he had was not being able to hold down his bottles.

Stomach Bug

Last week our girls were all complaining of stomach aches and each one ended up puking just once in a 24 hour period and then were better the next day.  We have no idea where this stomach bug came from as Bryan and I were fine.

Hudson's Bath Routine (Tricky with Catheter)

Here's how Hudson gets a bath: he just gets wiped down with a washcloth and soap! No actual baths yet as we can't risk getting his catheter contaminated with germs in the tub.   He doesn't mind his quick wipe down and doesn't know what he's missing, yet.

Hudson Nursing Care Approval!

Hooray! We are so excited to officially have a home nurse to help us out with Hudson's care at home. It has taken months to get everything organized but God has made everything work according to His plan and purpose.

4 month check up

4 months old!

Mr. Smiles was 4 months old yesterday! Hudson is such a happy and content baby. A month and a half ago was the last time we were in the hospital and we have really enjoyed being home with him, getting in a routine, sleeping mostly through the night, and simply loving on him.

July 12, 2016 Update

This past weekend Hudson had a cough that made things incredibly difficult with his feedings. Every time he coughed he would vomit up his feeding!

Hudson's Middle Name

A lot of people ask Jess and I about Hudson’s middle name “Ryle”  (rhymes with Lyle) mostly because they had never heard the name before.

A day in the life of Hudson:

* around 7:30am I wake up all smiley and happy to see mommy
* Mommy pops my pacifier in and washes her hands before disconnecting me from my cycler

A little update

Our last admittance into Riley Hospital was back on June 3rd-4th. Yep, we have not been back since then! This is the longest Hudson has been home with us since he's been born.

Surgery #4 today

Hudson did not get to come home today after all. Even after surgery yesterday his catheter still had trouble draining while on dialysis last night. So today he went in for surgery #4 to just replace his catheter with the next size up.

Thursday, May 26, 2016

Surgery #3

Yep, Hudson is only 2 1/2 months old and just had surgery #3 today. Early Wednesday morning we were having trouble getting his dialysate to drain from him. His cycler kept giving us error message after error message and by his 10th drain he was simply stuck on 85 mLs and simply would not drain any more.

2 months old!

Hudson was two months old this past Friday! AND he just started smiling this past week which is SO cute!  He is seriously adorable. We just love having him home to love on, snuggle, cuddle, hold, and kiss any time we want. We made it a whole week without any visits to Riley.

Reflecting on Hudson's first week home

So Hudson's first week home this past week was quite a roller coaster ride. We got discharged Thursday, April 28th, but had to stop back in on Monday for some blood work just to check his levels. We got to Riley around lunch time that Monday afternoon and I took Hudson to get his blood work done and Bryan took the girls to check out the Kid Zone that is now open at the hospital.

Hudson is HOME!

Hudson was discharged last Thursday, April 28th after a 46 day NICU/hospital stay! We are so glad that he is home and that our family is finally together. The girls are SO in love with their brother and just love showing him off. There is also lots of whining and arguing about whose turn it is to hold Hudson.

Update on Hudson 4/24/2016

Little mister had a great week last week up on the Renal Floor. Though I felt like we hardly saw Hudson or his team of doctors much because Bryan and I did some serious training.  We really learned a lot.

NICU Pictures!

Capturing Hope Photography is a free service offered to families in the NICU. I thought I would sign up to remember our time in the NICU and good thing I did because we left the NICU and headed to the Renal Floor 3 days later after these were taken. The pictures turned out way better than I thought they would! They are perfect! Enjoy viewing some of my favorites!

Weekend Update - April 16-17, 2016

This past Friday and Saturday Hudson has been off of dialysis during the day for 8 hours and then picks right back up doing dialysis hourly with 75mL exchanges. He has been taking 58mL of fortified breastmilk from a bottle.

1 Month Old!

Look who is ONE MONTH OLD today?! Hudson is SO precious to us and we thank God for him every single day. This past month has been the hardest thing our family has ever had to go through but we just thank God for all of it. There were a couple times we just didn't know if Hudson was going to make it and yet here we are today astounding the doctors.

A New Room

Highlight of today was that Hudson got moved to a new room! Instead of room 4243 we are now in 4242 which is a little bit bigger and has a window! The nurse he had today must have had a slow day because we came in today and she was like "let's change rooms and move Hudson to a crib today!".

4/9/2016 Update

Hudson is doing SO good post surgery. Especially since after surgery we basically had to start back at the beginning with minimum feedings and minimum dialysis due to being extremely careful that the small incision made in his belly button would not leak out any dialysate.

Training manual studying begins...

Bryan and my training manuals arrived today! It's time to memorize and study the manuals before our training begins. I heard there will even be a test! It's time to start learning how to become an expert on how to care for Hudson at home and to learn EVERYTHING there is about peritoneal dialysis.

4/5/2016 update

April 5, 2016 is the day I was supposed to be induced with Hudson.  Here we are today 23 days later and SO in love with our sweet little Hudson and SO in awe of all that God has done in his life.

Just Two Weeks Ago...

Just Two Weeks Ago....
Jessica and I spoke with the neurologist, the social worker and other NICU doctors and nurses about the option of hospice care for Hudson. The ball was completely in our court, and the doctors thought that hospice care was an option for Hudson due to the MRI's revealing of "severe brain damage" and the unknown possibility that his intestines were damaged to the point of not being able to receive dialysis.

First Day Wearing Clothes! 4-2-16

Hudson is wearing his very first outfit! We are SO excited for this moment. Come to find out he can wear onesies with snaps that easily let his catheter hang out.

Extubated! 3/29/16

Yesterday there was talk of getting Hudson extubated (breathing tube removed) sometime this week and today when we walked in to see him they were setting up to have him get it removed. I had no idea it would be the NEXT day!!

Hudson Opened His Eyes!

We had such a good day today with Hudson. As soon as we got to the hospital Mommy got to hold him right away and held him for almost 2 hours. The two of us listened to Keith and Kristyn Getty music, sang songs, read Dr. Suess books, and just hung out.

Hudson's First Easter

Happy Resurrection Sunday! Today Hudson is 2 weeks old and it's his first holiday: Easter. Hudson is looking pretty handsome in his bow tie and those baby booties are the cutest thing on earth too!

Saturday, March 26, 2016

3-26-16

Hudson is down a full pound since starting dialysis (today he weighed 7 lbs. 13 oz). The goal is to get him back to his birth weight of 6 lbs. 4 oz. or somewhere near it as he still has another pound and then some of fluid in him.

Day After First Surgery

So yesterday (3/23/16) Hudson had his surgery to place the catheter in his abdomen. It was a quick procedure and only took about 1 hour. Dr. Ladd was the surgeon and it was placed successfully.

Mercies Are New Every Morning!

His mercies really are new every day! The sun was shining
today and Bryan and I woke up having peace in our hearts.  The girls were so excited to have a play date with friends today. We dropped them off and headed right to the hospital.

1 Week Old!

Yesterday (3/20/16) Hudson turned 1 week old! It was also Palm Sunday, Papa Scott's 57th birthday, the first day of spring, and the sun was shining. It was a good day.

My Only Son

I've been waiting over 11 years to have a son. Ever since Jess found out she was pregnant with Annalese in August 2004, I've longed for a son. Then, in November 20, 2015 we finally got news we were having a boy!

Transferring Hospitals

So yesterday (3/18/16) was a crazy busy day and yet seems so long ago. We met with Hudson's neurologist after he had had an MRI scan the previous day (3/17). He told us Hudson does have multiple spots on both sides of his brain that showed what we all expected: his brain also had injury due to lack of oxygen. The spots are more like bruising/swelling and we won't know the long term affects of no oxygen to his brain until we see if he isn't meeting milestones as he grows.

Summary

Hudson Ryle Schrank was born on 3/13/2016 via emergency c-section due to a full placental abruption. He was trying to take breaths when he was born but they helped him out with compressions, an air bag and soon intubation shortly after birth.
