A lot of people ask Jess and I about Hudson’s middle name “Ryle” (rhymes with Lyle) mostly because they had never heard the name before.
About 5 years ago, I came across a book called “The Duties of Parents” by J.C. Ryle and it was (and still is) the most powerful and challenging parenting book I've ever read! After reading Ryle’s book on parenting, I came across other books he wrote along with sermons he preached from the 1800’s. His sermons, books, and pithy quotes have had a great impact on Jess and I. Not to mention, J.C. Ryle was born in 1816 and Hudson was born in 2016, 200 years later! #TeamHudson
Here’s a little more information on J.C. Ryle:
J.C. Ryle lived 1816-1900. He was an Anglican Bishop in the church of England. Ryle was a prolific writer, vigorous preacher, faithful pastor, husband of three wives, [widowed three times: Matilda died in 1847, Jessie died in 1860, Henrietta died in 1889] and the father to five children [one with Matilta and four with Jessie]. He was thoroughly evangelical in his doctrine and uncompromising in his Biblical principles.
Here are some of my favorite quotes from J.C. Ryle
"Trials are intended to make us think, to wean us from the world, to send us to the Bible, and to drive us to our knees." J.C. Ryle
"Look not to yourselves. You are by nature wretched, miserable, poor, blind and naked. Look simply unto Jesus." -J.C. Ryle
"Jesus is a complete Savior. He does not merely take away the guilt of a believer's sin, He does more-He breaks its power." -J. C Ryle
"The only way to be really happy in such a world as this, is to be ever casting all our cares on God." -J.C. Ryle
"Let us seek friends that will stir us up about our prayers, our Bible reading, our use of time, our souls, and our salvation." -J.C. Ryle
"Tell the young, tell the poor, tell the aged, tell the ignorant, tell the sick, tell the dying—tell them all about Christ." J.C. Ryle
Finally, in September 2015, I started a J.C. Ryle facebook "fan" page. In the last 10 months, the page (https://www.facebook.com/JCRyleQuotes) has grown to almost 20,000 followers and the website (www.jcryle.info) has had nearly 250,000 pageviews, how cool is that? -Bryan
P.S. We also named him after Missionary Hudson Taylor :)
